Best Greek destinations for Budget Travel
Greece is a beautiful country that’s been a popular tourist destination for years. There are 6000 islands in Greece, only 227 of which have people living on them. So, how are you supposed to decide which of those 227 you’re going to visit? They each have something unique to offer and some are more touristy than others so you have to decide what your priorities are. If you’re trying to travel on a budget and saving money is your first priority, some islands are a lot better than others. These are the best Greek destinations for people travelling on a budget.
Santorini
Santorini is a relatively small island but there’s plenty going on there. It’s often best known for the red and black rock beaches so, even though you won’t get the classic white sandy beach that people often associate with Greece, you’ll get a one of a kind experience. There are also a lot of other uninhabited islands nearby so there is a lot to explore. If you want to see them all, you can always check out sailing holidays. Taking a boat out and heading off to the other islands is without doubt the best way to explore Greece. Back on Santorini, you’ll find some impressive Greek ruins along one of the many great hiking paths that cover the island. All of the towns are built right into the cliffside so you’ll have an incredible view of the ocean and the sunset in the evening pretty much anywhere you decide to stay. Santorini is usually known for being a romantic island perfect for couples but there’s something for everybody there. While you’re there, make sure not to miss the thermal baths. The island is covered with lots of hot springs that are ideal for relaxation. There are some great vineyards in Santorini as well so make sure you don’t miss out on the delicious wine when you’re there.
Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is a great Greek port town with a small town feel and a friendly atmosphere, making it a good choice for families. Like most Greek islands, it’s dotted with ruins and brilliant architecture but it has a little more going on than Santorini. There are plenty of great restaurants serving local food. You’ll also find a vibrant music scene with a lot of live performances going on around the island. If you’re a nature lover, Thessaloniki is perfect for you. Lake Vistonida, situated a few hours away from Thessaloniki is home to over 300 species of migratory birds so if you’re interested in seeing wildlife, you absolutely have to go there.
Milos
If it’s beaches that you’re after, Milos is the place to go. If you’ve seen postcards of Greece, you’re probably looking at Milos. This is where you’ll find the clear blue waters and sandy beaches that the country is so famous for. It’s also the most family friendly place in the country. There are some thermal baths here as well and some huge caves that are great for exploring. It’s also a scuba divers paradise so if you want to see some incredible marine life, Milos is your best bet.
