If you are planning a safari in Africa, there is much to consider, not least the items you should include in your luggage, and while most holidays allow you instant access to shops of all kinds, going on a safari does not offer that luxury, therefore, you need to take that into account when packing.
Here are a few essential items to include when packing for an African safari.
A Pair of Binoculars – While most people bring their digital camera, few think about binoculars, and in order to get the best views of the animals, a good pair of binoculars are essential. You can, of course, buy them when you arrive, but prices would be much higher, so invest in a good pair from an online supplier and you’ll be very glad you did!
A Basic First Aid Kit – This is one thing you should pack, as you never know when you might need it. Organised safaris are as safe as can be, yet if you are out and about and have a small accident, the first aid kit will prove to be invaluable. The kit should include cleaning alcohol, plasters, a few bandages and some paracetamol. If you book with companies such as African and Oriental Ltd luxury guided safaris in Namibia, they can help you with your packing list.
Prescription Meds – If you are currently taking any form of prescription medication, make sure you have enough for the duration of your trip, and don’t put this in your main luggage, rather keep it in your carry-on bag.
Layered Clothing – In Africa, you can experience very cold and very hot temperatures, so plan for layered clothing, as it is easy to add a layer in the chilly evenings, or take one off as it gets hotter. Thin cotton T-shirts are recommended, along with a couple of sweaters for the evenings, and don’t forget peaked caps to shade you during the hot days. Avoid bright colours, as it is better to blend in when on safari. Make sure you have long pants for the evenings.
Universal Plug Set – You can buy a set of universal adaptors that will allow you to recharge your devices and your rechargeable batteries, which is a must if you want to take video and stills. Don’t forget to pack sufficient SD cards for storage. For more information on what to pack on an African safari, there are articles you can find online that tackle on the matter.
Sunscreen & Mosquito Repellent – Absolutely essential, as it does get very hot during the day, and, of course, mosquitoes are around in large numbers early in the morning and at dusk. While some countries have Malaria, your tour operator would be the best person to ask about diseases that you should have vaccinations against.
All of the above should be included in your packing, and by talking to an established tour operator, you can get more information about what to pack, along with useful advice when you get there.
