Daphne (2007)
As is well-known and frequently discussed, the gothically-inclined English woman of letters, Daphne Du Maurier, also happened to be a lesbian, but virulently suppressed these inclinations given her beloved father’s abhorrence to her behavior – attitudes that Du Maurier imbibed and that gave her lifelong pangs of guilt and self-denial.
She experienced two life-altering loves, however: an irreciprocal one for straight Ellen Doubleday, the wife of her publisher Nelson Doubleday, and another for bisexual actress Gertrude Lawrence, which Lawrence purportedly helped her consummate.
As created for Du Maurier’s centenary, Claire Beavan’s BBC production Daphne dramatizes the connection between these two relationships; Beavan pulls from private letters and memoirs to depict the series of events by which Du Maurier (played by Geraldine Somerville) fell into an impassioned love for Doubleday (Elizabeth McGovern), and how the unrequited nature of that love spurred her on to author a play about forbidden romantic longings, September Tide – a play that, ironically, introduced her to the second great love of her life, Lawrence (Janet McTeer).
In so doing, the film not only resurrects a long-buried and hidden part of Du Maurier’s life but explores the connection between life experiences and highly personalized artistic expression. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi.

Viola De Mar (The Sea Purple) (2009)
A woman who dares to live as she pleases is officially declared a man in this historical drama inspired by a true story. Angela (Valeria Solarino) is a strong, passionate, and willful woman whose father (Ennio Fantastichini) operates a mining business for the Spanish royal family.
Her father wanted a boy and makes no secret of his disgust with Angela, despite (or perhaps because of) her willingness to flaunt the conventions of what is acceptable for a woman in 19th century Spain.
Angela is powerfully attracted to her childhood friend Sara (Isabella Ragonese), and though Sara is pledged to marry Tommaso (Marco Foschi), Angela sets out to win her heart.
Her father, however, has arranged a marriage between Angela and the son of a business associate; Angela bitterly refuses to wed the young man, declaring she would prefer death to the false relationship. Her mother, Lucia (Giselda Volodi), arranges for a radical solution to this dilemma; using some privileged information as leverage, she persuades the village priest to declare that Angela is, in fact, Angelo and has been a male all along.
This action prevents Angela from marrying the boy and allows her and Sara to be together, but now her father insists she take her place in a business she doesn’t care about, and the community isn’t sure how to react to the new “man” in the village. Viola di Mare (aka Purple Sea) was an official selection at the 2010 San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival.

Nitrate Kisses (1992)
The first part of an experimental History Trilogy directed by Barbara Hammer. Nitrate Kisses combines interviews with four same-gender couples.
Hammer unveils an invisible history contextualized in relation to the romantic behavior of gays and lesbians of her time.
The couples featured in the film are intimate, they are two elderly lesbians, an interracial gay male couple, two young pierced and lesbian tattooed women of color and an S/M lesbian couple.
The scenes of the gay male couple are overlaid with the Motion Picture Production Code.
Part of the film focuses on the story of American novelist Willa Cather, who destroyed many personal letters and papers before her death; the film argues that Cather was covering up evidence of lesbianism. (Note, however, that such claims have been disputed by other scholars of Cather’s life and career.) Another section of the movie explores the treatment of lesbians by the Third Reich.

4 Minutes (Vier Minuten) (2006)
A 2006 German movie. An embittered, 80-year-old piano teacher working in a women’s prison takes on the most challenging student in her enduring career in director Chris Kraus’ low-key musical drama.
For years, Miss Krueger (Monica Bleibtreu) has been teaching classical piano to some of the most hardened female prisoners in all of Germany, but upon meeting brooding new inmate Jenny (Hannah Herzsprung), Miss Krueger finally seems to have found the one student she can’t break through to — until she hears Jenny play, that is.
A former piano prodigy whose abusive childhood prompted her to neglect her natural gift for music in the name of survival, Jenny is a violent offender whose notorious temper has, as an adult, repeatedly landed her behind bars.
Though she does still display considerable talent on the ivory, her decidedly antisocial behavior compelled the troubled prisoner to repeatedly sabotage opportunities to take part in recitals that would, at the very least, provide a momentary respite from her grim day-to-day existence.
