You can visit in summer and still very much enjoy this beautiful country.
Read on for some tips on making the most of KSA in the summer, even if you’re used to much cooler climates.
Saudi Arabian summers: What you need to know
Summer in KSA runs from June to August. Most days, you’ll find that the temperature reaches at least 38 °C, and in desert regions, it can get considerably hotter. Humidity is generally low, however, except along the coast. There is little rainfall in the summer.
Temperatures are usually pleasant early in the morning and in the evening, so these are good times for sightseeing or more active pursuits. In the middle of the day, you might prefer to find an indoor activity or a pool to lounge by.
Here are four places to enjoy during the Saudi Arabian summer.
1. Taif, the city of roses
Taif is known as the city of roses thanks to its many rose plantations. During full bloom in the early summer, you can imagine how beautiful the scent is. Taif’s beauty and its cooler climate make it popular with Saudi Arabian holiday goers.
The city is surrounded by mountains. It is a perfect base for hiking with some mesmerizing views at Al Hada mountain in Taif and also in the nearby Al Shafa and Al Hada mountainous areas.
Taif is home to a huge heritage museum as well, so it is an ideal place to learn a little bit about KSA history. Shubra Palace is also an architectural gem and a fascinating place to visit. Built in the early 20th century, it has strikingly detailed latticework windows and lovely balconies.
2. Hegra, a UNESCO world heritage site
Out in the desert at Hegra, you can witness more than 100 well-preserved tombs and other evidence of ancient civilization. It is thought that parts of the site date back to before the first millennium BCE. Although deserted now, the civilization was occupied for millennia, showing signs of Roman influence. Over the hottest months, you can learn about the fascinating culture here from the comfort of a vintage car on a unique guided tour.
Base yourself in the nearby city of AlUla and visit the incredible new Arts Valley project. This features titanic art installations with a beautiful desertscape backdrop. At sunset and shortly after, you’ll see these illuminated artworks at their very best, so there’s no need to endure the midday sun.
3. Scuba diving and snorkeling in Tabuk
Tabuk province is an unmissable part of KSA and a trip here is perfect for summer visitors. It’s in the northwest of the country, close to Jordan. It is famous for ancient temples, archaeological sites, its natural beauty, and for being referenced in both the Bible and Holy Quran.
It is also home to one of KSA’s most beautiful stretches of coastline as well as a milder climate. Beaches are pristine and are ideal places to spend a KSA summer. The Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea offer clear waters that are ideal for scuba diving and snorkelling. The province takes its name from the oasis city Tabuk which is a perfect base for exploring the heritage sites, mountains and beaches of the area.
4. Vibrant arts and culture in Jeddah
If you enjoy film, music, art and museums, Jeddah is the perfect stop on any tour of Saudi Arabia. This city is the perfect mix of old and new. All modern venues are well air-conditioned and historic districts like Old Jeddah feature a maze of well-shaded alleyways so you can spend all day out and about soaking up this atmospheric city.
However, Jeddah really comes alive at sunset. Highlights for an evening in Jeddah include Baab Makkah open-air market, the illuminated King Fahd’s fountain, and the city’s waterfront. This city is also famous for its traditional cuisine so there are many excellent restaurants in Jeddah.
These four places are far from the only places where you can escape this summer in Saudi Arabia. Why not continue your research and take a look at what else this beautiful kingdom has to offer?
